McDonald’s To Phase Out Gestation Grates

On Monday of this week, McDonald’s announced that they will now require U.S. pork suppliers to phase out the use of gestation crates. In a press release by the Humane Society of the United States, Dan Gorsky, the senior vice presidents of McDonald’s North American Supply Chain Managment said, “McDonald’s believes gestation stalls are not a sustainable production system for the future. There are alternatives that we think are better for the welfare of sows… McDonald’s wants to see the end of sow confinement in gestation stalls in our supply chain.” This step by McDonald’s has been called an ‘earthquake’ in the pig business,  but some animal rights activists feel that McDonald’s isn’t doing enough to improve their animal welfare standards.

What do you think about McDonald’s announcement to phase out gestation grates?

  1. This is a cogent and commendable move by McDonald’s. The company is showing leadership right in their own front yard on an issue which the public is now keenly sensitive to. We’re in a new era with regard to food product choices, and meat products in particular.
This will be viewed very positively
