U.S. Vegan Population DOUBLES in Just Two Years

Today in amazing news: according to a new Harris Interactive study commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, the number of vegans in the United States has DOUBLED since 2009 to 2.5% of the population. An amazing 7.5 million U.S. citizens now eat vegan diets that do not include any animal products – no meat, poultry, fish, dairy or eggs. Close to 16 million, or 5%, identify as vegetarian, never eating meat, poultry or fish.

If this rate continues, vegans will be 10% of the U.S. population in 2015, 40% in 2019, and in 80 % in 2050!

This would mean an end to the exploitation and suffering of billions of farmed animals. The study also revealed that 33% of U.S. citizens are eating vegetarian meals a significant amount of the time and ordering vegetarian meals at restaurants, though they are not vegetarians. That is over 100 million people, one third of the country!

A Vegan Diet Helped This Woman Lose 90 Pounds (Photo)

What’s the only weight-loss plan that has been scientifically proven to take weight off and keep it off for more than a year? A vegan diet! The countless individuals who went plant-based and lost 20, 40, 60 pounds are proof of just that and Rachel Berner is one of those inspiring individuals. Rachel, who works with kids with special needs and has been vegan for 2 years and vegetarian for 6 months prior to that transition. What happened when she went vegan? I’ll let the photo speak for itself.

Rachel lost an incredible 90 pounds less than a year after going vegan. She cut meat from her diet because of her love for animals and then after reading books promoting plant-based nutrition, she started looking at eating from a new perspective. She then realized that animal products were not necessary for good health and she completely cut out animal products.

Losing weight wasn’t the only change Rachel noticed. She says that she doesn’t get as much as she used to and her skin is much clearer and she has more energy. What’s her recommendation for those trying to get fit/healthy too? Rachel says, “Stay away from processed foods as much as possible and focus on eating nutrient dense foods (i.e. greens, beans, fruits). There are a lot of great blogs and Facebook pages with vegan recipes, and it’s a great place to network and connect with like minded people.”

Truly inspiring!
